Psalm 61

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I;

for you are my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.

Let me abide in your tent forever, find refuge under the shelter of your wings. Selah

For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations!

May he be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

So I will always sing praises to your name, as I pay my vows day after day.

The Rock that is higher than I. I grew up in Colorado in the shadow of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I have always looked up in awe at the awesome wonder that are the towering mountains and hills. When my family and I visited Colorado a few years ago on vacation, we went up to the first of the kids’ 14,000’ peaks. It was I think my 10th or 11th that I have gone up, but it was the first 14er for our kids. We did cheat and drove to the top of Mt Evans rather than climbing, but…Anyway, this pic was taken of me and one of my boys at the marker noting the highest point on Evans…14,265’. We did have to climb the last bit – it wasn’t all driving.

Whenever I have reached the top of a mountain, I find myself in awe of what is around me – the distances that can be seen, the beauty that surrounds. The wonder of Creation that is all around. I am thankful for the many times that I feel I have been led to points in my life where I am able to see far more and far further than I could have seen otherwise – the Lord showing me much more than I could see on my own.

I think of the mountaintop experience of Peter, James, and John in Matthew 17. They were taken to a high mountain with Jesus and there saw a vision of Jesus unlike anything they could have imagined. The high place and seeing more and further than they could have ever seen on their own.
