Romans 9:30-33 – Israel’s Unbelief
What then are we to say? Gentiles, who did not strive for righteousness, have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; but Israel, who did strive for the righteousness that is based on the law, did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,
as it is written,
“See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people stumble, a rock that will make them fall,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame

——

Walking around our kitchen tonight as all the preparations were going on for Thanksgiving dinner, it was easy to trip over one another, to forget that the dishwasher door happened to get left open, etc. Or to step on one of the many legos left on the floor as the kids were playing. Similar to how easy it is to just slip on a single rock that is in the middle of a path. The distinction that Paul makes here is one that when you dig deeper is definitely a significant one, but at first glance it feels like one that doesn’t seem like much at all. Yet, it is so easy to continue to slip and fall on that in our day to day lives – it isn’t just those, as Paul says, who seek to live according to the law, but how easy it is to slip into a life based solely on living by “works.”
