Hope 09 – Light

Last night before our church Session meeting (leadership team), several of us read the passage that was my selected passage for yesterday (Monday) – Psalm 119 – This is the longest (by far) of the Psalms and its a beautiful meditation upon God’s Word.  Hope shows up many many times and as we read through most of it (it was too long to get through all of it before the meeting began), several of us were drawn to what is possibly the most well known part of the Psalm – while it doesn’t use the word “hope”, hope is throughout what is said in verse 105 –

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

Then this morning, I was heading to the gym and listening to U2’s new album and the song “13 (Song for Someone)” came on.  Something about that song, about what is stirring in me and around me, about Psalm 119, and specifically about the light in the darkness – just grabbed me.  Lord, be the light to my path…

Here is the youtube link and the lyrics…

And if the terrors of the night
Come creeping into your days
And the world comes stealing children from your room
Guard your innocence from hallucination
And know that darkness always gathers around the light

If there is a light
We can’t always see
If there is a world
We can’t always be
If there is a dark
Now we shouldn’t doubt
And there is a light
Don’t let it go out

When the wind screams and shouts
And the sea is a dragon’s tail
And the ship that stole your heart away
Sets sail

When all you’ve left is leaving
And all you got is grieving
And all you know is needing

If there is a light
We can’t always see
If there is a world
We can’t always be
If there is a dark
Now we shouldn’t doubt
And there is a light
Don’t let it go out

‘Cause this is a song
A song for someone
Someone like me

I know the world is done
But you don’t have to be
I’ve got a question for the child in you before it leaves
Are you tough enough to be kind?
Do you know your heart has its own mind?
Darkness gathers around the light
Hold on
Hold on

There is a light
We can’t always see
If there is a world
We can’t always be
If there is a dark
That we shouldn’t doubt
And there is a light
Don’t let it go out

And this is a song
A song for someone
This is a song
A song for someone
Someone like me
Someone like me
Someone like me

  1. I have been thinking about HOPE and LIGHT and the hypocrisy of the church in its expectation to hold its parisherers to LOVE and FORGIVENESS. Without LOVE and FORGIVENESS, where is the LIGHT? the HOPE? For me it is all in FAITH in my LORD and Savior JESUS CHRIST, which through MUSIC and LOVE brings the ADVENT closer for me….closer to GOD, but also leaves me wondering what has happened to MY HOPE in MY CHURCH? It is LOST….I have so much FAITH and MUSIC in my life that I can deal without having other church members hold on to LOVE and FORGIVENESS, MERCY and GRACE.

I believe we, as people, need more interaction amongst each other holding us all to the Grace of God to give us Hope forever waiting. Without trust in each other, the church holds very little for me….just my way of worshipping my LORD and Savior, JESUS CHRIST. I am an outcast in my church’s world, but one of GOD’s angels. I know it…HE knows it. But pettiness, the inability to communicate with each other, and the lack of LOVE, FORGIVENESS, MERCY, and GRACE leave me wondering what HOPE is there in this world. And those who do not practice LOVE and FORGIVENESS should be looking deep into your own soul, wondering how you may stop hurting and punishing others.

My concentration, therefore is in the next world….to be with the LORD forever and always.
